West Texas Death Fest will be taking place at The Wreck Room 6007 E. Amarillo Blvd on March 29 through the 30.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.

The bands are coming in from around the United States, including several bands from Texas.  There will be 31 bands performing in the festival, which include Abolishment of Flesh, Putrid Pile and Bath Salt Zombies.  The tickets are $12 for a single day pass and $22 for the two-day pass.

“The tickets are reasonably priced for the amount of bands that are going to be there,” Heath McCarty, co-host for KWTS heavy metal show The Rocket, said.

The festival has been going on for five years.  It started to highlight different styles of death metal to Amarillo, according to Jess Cazares, co-promoter for West Texas Death Fest.  The festival usually occurs in March, and each year, it has gotten bigger.

“The show is the only show of its kind in the area, and if I am correct, the next closest one is eight hours away,” Cazares said.  “We try to choose the best to choose different sub genres of death metal so we still have a good variety.”

Dr. Martin Jacobsen, associate professor of English, teaches a heavy metal as a literature class.

“[Death metal is] a form of extreme trash metal that uses heavy distortion, growled vocals, and complex structures and timing.”

Concert goers can expect the show to be exceptionally heavy, McCarty said.

“It is going to be heavy as hell,” he said. “[Death Metal] is forged in the bowels of Satan.”

The promoters are hopeful that they will be able to continue this tradition for many years to come.

“Every year, we have such an amazing time and can’t imagine not showcasing our favorite style of music,” Cazares said.
