Lady Buffs defeat Adams State Grizzlies

The West Texas A&M women’s basketball team took on the Adams State Grizzlies Nov. 24 for their first home game of the 2013-14 season. The Lady Buffs took the 76-53 victory, improving to 4-0. Adams State fell to 4-1.

“I don’t know how long it’s been since [WTAMU] women’s basketball have accomplished a 4-0 [record],” Head Coach Mark Kellogg said. “However, we are off to a great start.”

The Lady Buffs finished the first half outscoring Adams State 39-23 with 8 out of 13 players scoring. However, in the second half Adams State opened the half scoring 15 points. The Grizzlies scored 30 points overall in the second half, while WT kept Adams State at a steady distance as the Lady Buffs scored 37 points. The Lady Buffs took the win with 20 assists, 23 turnovers and having 10-of-13 players score.

“We did not play as close as what we are capable of playing, but we still managed the win,” Coach Kellogg said.

For the game, WT shot 22-46 field goals having a 47.8 percent. For three pointers, there were 8-21 and 24-26 from the free throw line.

Junior guard Lacee Logan scored a total of 14 points, going 4-5 on field goals, 2-of-3 three pointers and 4-4 free throws – all in the second half. Junior forward Chontiquah White had an overall 11 points, having 3-4 field goals and 5-6 free throws.

Adams State’s Mariah Gonzales drive to the net many times, having accumulated a total of 9 points, 3-11 field goals and 3-3 from the free throw line. Alyssa Palma led the team, having 17 points overall. She went 5-11 in three pointers, 5-13 in field goals and 2-2 from the free throw line.

The Lady Buffs will stick home before hosting the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic at the First United Bank Center. WT will take on former Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. before battling the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.
