It’s OK to Not Know What You Want

Going to college is a big step in one’s life. From a young age you are expected to finish high school and go to college and make something of yourself. But what exactly do you make of yourself if you don’t know what you want to be? Some might think that it is expected to know what you want to be before you get to college, but that’s never really the case. If you step onto a college campus for the first time and ask yourself , “Why am I here if I don’t even know what I want to be?” we are here to tell you that you are not alone. We are here to tell you that it’s OK if you don’t know what you want to major in and it’s ok if you change your major more than one time; it’s what college is all about. You don’t go to college because you know what you want to be the day you applied , you go to college to explore and to see what they have to offer. People go to college wanting to be doctors and graduate with a degree in mathematics, or plan on majoring in art, but come out double majoring in agriculture or science; honestly, there is no in-between.

Come to college prepared for anything, because anything can happen, and you can always be exposed to things that can pique your interest. Another thing that is common among students is being involved in organizations that aren’t related to their major. Here at The Prairie News Organization, we have had many walks of life come and go and sometimes they aren’t journalism majors or even Mass Communication majors. From our personal experience, it’s OK if you are interested in organizations that aren’t the same as your major. From experience we learn that people here can be very welcoming, especially here at The Prairie.
