Lady Buffs Hold Off Wayland Baptist Despite 26 Turnovers

Canyon, TX- Exhibition games are scheduled to learn and develop team chemistry. The Lady Buffs held off a pesky Wayland Baptist team 61-56.

Despite the victory over a NAIA power, the Lady Buffs will tell there’s a long way to go before they reach their potential for the season. Head Coach Kristen Mattio recognizes the work that must be done. “Wayland Baptist is a solid team and last year they gave us a run for our money, this year they did as well.” Mattio said. “Obviously, we have a lot of things we need to clean up before we can go in the direction we want to go in.”

Mattio and the players agreed that turnover are one of those things as they had 26 on the game. Alie Decker, who had 14 points, says that once the team comes together throughout the season things will improve. “It starts with our turnovers,” Decker said. “It’s a lack of detail, a mental thing our transition defense needs to get better but everything starts with our turnovers.”

As they cliché is, step one to fixing a problem is identifying it and then fixing it. Coach Mattio has already taken it upon herself to get this issue corrected.

“I take full on responsibility,” Mattio said. We got to figure out how to take the next step and get past some of that stuff. We have plenty of offensive firepower on our team and now we just got to make sure we are taking care of the ball.”

The Lady Buffs will have a short break before taking on St. Edwards at home on Friday November 18th. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
