Buffs go ice cold in Colorado

After scoring 12 goals in their opening match, the #24 ranked WTAMU men’s soccer team managed one goal in their two games Sept. 5,7 in Golden, Colo.

On Sept. 5, WT faced the defending national champion Fort Lewis Skyhawks. The Buffs defeated FLC in 2007 and attempted to get another win over the Skyhawks while in Colo. This game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA regional finals making for a heated competition between the Buffs and the Skyhawks. WT’s Colin Bjostad received a yellow card in the sixth minute. Before 30 minutes had been played, FLC had taken a 3-0 lead and WT was down a man after Bjostad was issued a second yellow card. The Buffs managed a consolation goal in the 56th minute when Alfredo Chavez scored a free kick from 30 yards away. But, FLC continued to dominate as they put the game away in the 72nd minute making the final score 4-1. During the match, referees issued eight cards and called 39 fouls.

On Sept 7, the Buffs faced #3 ranked Colorado School of Mines. Two goals in the opening 25 minutes dug the Buffs into an early 2-0 deficit. CSM score two more goals in the second half and claimed the shutout victory 4-0. This brings the Buffs’ overall record to 1-2. This is the first time since 2004 the WT men’s soccer program has lost two out of their first three games. WT plays at home Tuesday, September 14th against UT-Permian Basin. Kickoff is schedule for 6 p.m.
