NAACP holds Inspiring People campaign to honor Black History Month

The WTAMU branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held an Inspiring People campaign Feb. 1-8 to honor Black History Month.

According to Vice President Kirsten McCowan, the event was an opportunity for the WT community to come and honor anyone who has made a difference in their lives.

“This was a great event to bring us all closer together,” Temitayo Fakiyesi, NAACP president, said. The event proved very successful, honoring over 100 people throughout the week. The nominations cost $1 and nominators were allowed to send a message with the nomination. The nominee then received a note stating they had been named as an inspiring person in someone’s life.

“Inspiring people is about the honor of numerous contributions that African Americans and individuals of African descent have made,” Joye Boyd, a freshman at WT, said. “The WTAMU community had the opportunity to pay it forward and honor individuals of different races, ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds who have positively impacted and inspired them.”

Inspiring People is just one of the ways the NAACP is working to create a bigger presence on campus. The organization has many events coming up, such as The Brilliance Affair Banquet March 30 and an on-campus talent show in April.
