Faculty, staff, students and friends of the Department of Agricultural Sciences at WT gathered in the Agriculture and Natural Science Building on April 27 to celebrate achievements during the past year.
WTAMU’s Dance department will be putting on their annual spring dance concert from April 28-30. This year’s theme is the “True Colors of Dance,” where the performers will be able to showcase styles of dancing that may be unfamiliar to the audience.
Every year, the community gathers to help raise awareness for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life. This year, West Texas will host the event on April 29 in the new Buffalo Sports Complex.
Spring Fling brought the party to WT on April 16, featuring entertainment for all ages. Sponsored by CORE, it was an opportunity for the community to come together to see local bands, play carnival games, and enjoy a good Snow Cone.
In the United States, the Hispanic population is increasing at a high rate, leading to the necessity of increasing the Hispanic media. The 2010 Census reports that 16.3 percent of the population is Hispanic or Latino. They also report the Hispanic/Latino population increased by 43 percent between 2000 and 2010. More locally, President of V-Me (Hispanic TV channel) Carmen DiRienzo, said that 25 percent of Amarillo alone consists of Hispanic people.
The Buffs gained momentum for the last two weekends of the season on April 15-16 as they won a three game series against Abilene Christian University 3-1.
Earth Day is one of the most recognized environmental movements on the planet. It began on April 22, 1970, and has been moving ever since. WTAMU’s science clubs and local Amarillo and Canyon organizations are teaming up to host an Earth Day Fair on April 20. The fair will help educate the public about the earth and how to help the environment.
On April 11, the university hosted a volunteer expo where students could get involved in the community. Programs such as Family Support Services of Amarillo, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Texas Panhandle, CareNet and Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains had booths where information about volunteer opportunities could be found.
In Fall 2011, WTAMU will have a new sorority join Greek Life. Matt Maples, associate director of student activities explained that since last fall, the Panhellenic sororities (which consist of Chi Omega, Delta Zeta and Zeta Tau Alpha) have been looking into the possibility of bringing another sorority to campus.
