WT Night Watch

Much like a neighborhood watch, a few WT students have decided that they want to have the same for the Univeristy.

WT Night Watch is a program that was started last semester by David Osgood, President, and Franklin Preuninger, Vice President, who noticed a high crime alert on campus in 2015. While some of these alerts were disproved, they decided they wanted to make sure the campus was as safe as possible.

“This program is supposed to do one it helps U.P.D we are an extra set of eyes and ears, as well as to keep students safe late at night” Preuninger, junior Civil Engineering major, said.

Not only does this help the university police department, but the members also serve as escorts for students walking to their cars, dorms or anywhere else around campus. The people who are providing these services are those who volunteer to do so after they go through UPD.

“Each person who joins WT Night Watch must submit to a background check that is done through the University Police Department just to ensure that the people who are wanting to help are safe to do so,” Osgood, junior Marketing major, said.

The ultimate goal of this program is to provide a safer feel of the campus for every student in any way they can. Even though this is meant for the students, the members of WT Night Watch are also gaining volunteer hours and experience as well.

“For the members of the group I would hope this will give them a feeling of satisfaction and pride knowing they are doing what they can to make this a better place,” Officer Johnnie McGraw, the patrolman for the West Texas A&M Police Department, said. “For students not in the group, I would hope it might make them feel safer on campus, and let them know that there are people out there that are willing to lend a hand if needed.”
