Prophets and Outlaws Performs in Amarillo
March 10, 2016
Prophets and Outlaws is a Dallas-based band that plays Southern Rock with a hint of soul. They have developed a sound that is like no other and ties in their passion for blues while still incorporating their country roots.
“I think that we have soul in our music and of course, there are a couple of other guys that have soul as well, but I think we do a unique job at combining that with our live performances,” Matt Boggs, lead singer of Prophets and Outlaws said. “We’re up there trying to get the energy going and bringing that soul feel and vibe and we think it also goes really well with Texas music, and I just think we have something special going on and we are incredibly thankful for it.”
What started as high school friends who kept up with each other after graduating college, began playing cover songs. Later on, they began putting in the effort on their music and took a new direction of southern rock soul. Along with the new direction, influences from their past also played a big part in creating their name.
“We grew up with the outlaws when we were younger,” Boggs said. “Those people back then who played music were playing it from their hearts and we were thinking about that a lot. We also thought a lot about old John Wayne movies that we used to watch and even though he was an outlaw, he taught us about good moral values and how to live your life. So we thought maybe a prophet is an outlaw, like a different side of the same pool. So with those things in mind, we knew we were playing our music from our hearts just like the outlaws did and that’s how the name came to be.”
And with the bands interesting past with their first break in 2013, when they entered the Ranch Factor contest presented by the local Ft. Worth radio station KFWR “The Ranch.” They won a radio promotion deal with Nashville-based Vision Entertainment. The band as also landed two music spots on the ABC hit drama “Nashville” within one month’s time.
Since the beginning of this month, the band has been traveling all across Texas to show off their unique style. Their first stop was in Houston, Texas at the start of the month, but recently the band came through the Amarillo area to play at Hoot’s Pub on Saturday, March 5th.
“Well, we have favorite places that we like to go to in Amarillo, especially Hoot’s Pub,” Drummer James Guckenheimer said. “At first, we did not know just how big Amarillo actually is, it’s huge, so we figured that would be a great place to perform for people and college students around the area. And also having some friends that live there just made it a great place to go.”
While traveling on tour for the next few months, the band will also be putting out their brand new EP, which will be released on March 25th. This will be the bands fifth EP to be released, their others include, “Self-Titled”, “Wanted”, “Wolf Howl”, and “Texas Home”. The band will also be in Dallas performing at The House of Blues for their C.D. release as well.
“We are just excited about being out in west Texas and we hope everyone really loved our texas soul. We’re really about our live performances and we really want to reach out to people and know they are having a great time by nodding their heads and getting into the music like we are”
You can surely hear all these elements in their music and also in the way that they are pushing the boundaries of today’s music and see the faces of the audience really light up when watching the band. Just one listen to any of their songs and you will get you hooked and fall in love with their Texas soul.
Prophets and Outlaws will be performing next at Tucker Hall in Waco, Texas on April 2nd. For more information on their tour dates, you can go to their website at http://www.prophetsandoutlaws.com/#schedule
