Phantom Vibration Syndrome
September 22, 2016
Do you ever have that moment when you are a hundred percent sure you heard or felt your phone go off in your pocket but it actually didn’t? Well, you and many other people could be suffering from “phantom vibration syndrome.”
I will admit that this does happen to me all the time! Just last weekend I could have sworn my phone went off at least three times and I asked my little sister to check my phone for me. My phone did not go off at all.
According to a report done by CBS news, a study involving 290 college students found out that nearly 90 percent of the students agreed that they had sometimes felt the phantom phone sensations. But why is this now happening?
Over the past few years, we have seen technology skyrocket. With so many different iPhones or Android’s, laptops, hover boards and virtual reality games, we are becoming so used and adapting so quickly to everything, it is now becoming part of our human nature. Some people can’t even go anywhere or even or a few hours of their day without having or being on their phones.
We seem to become so worried that we will miss a phone call or text, that it makes our minds super aware of the sensations of our phone going off. Or it could even be caused by friction since our phones are in our pockets most of the time. Now this is not the first time a situation like this has been brought up before. This topic even ties back into the late 1990’s when everyone was using pagers. The same thing was happening then, people would take their pagers everywhere with them and become so aware and worried that they could possibly miss someone trying to reach them, they would think their pager had gone off.
Now this syndrome is not harmful at all, however, there are some people who do worry about this getting worse. Some people believe that technology is becoming too addictive and dangerous to us that it could be hurting our personal interaction skills or even our communication skills. But who know where this topic will go from here. Maybe it could possibly become a huge deal one day or might just be another little thing that we don’t even think about anymore.
What do you think? Does this happen to you or other people that you know? Why do you think this happens to some people?
