Buffs bats in full swing sweeping Javelinas

West Texas A&M University baseball finished up a four-game series with Texas A&M Kingsville University on Sun Feb. 23. The Buffs finished off the Javelinas in a clean sweep (4 out of 4 games in the series won).

WTAMU got out to an exciting start with a walk-off victory Friday evening. With an exciting ending, the Buffs found themselves behind early on in the game, giving up six runs in three innings.

OF/RHP Mathew Stary of TAMUK sent a shot over the wall for a two-run blast in the top of the 2nd. OF Hayden Fails sent a solo shot over, extending the score 3-0 Javelinas after two innings. In the third, TAMUK scored two off of a single/error, adding to the TAMUK score, 6-0.

The Buffs would then get on the board with a Kyle Moos solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Buffalo bats would then get hot, as WTAMU continued to score five more unanswered points. OF Cade Engle would then end the night with a walk-off two-run single, sending the Buffs home with a 7-6 victory.

The second and third games in the series would be played the following day, Feb. 22.

Buffs shot off fast, scoring six runs in the second inning alone. The Buffs pitching and defense would then hold the Javelinas to only one hit, while WTAMU continued to score their last five runs in the fourth. LHP Zach Dixon proceeded to shutout 10 TAMUK batters, allowing his first hit in the seventh. The buffs also maintained an impressive H/R ratio, with 11 runs in 13 hits.

Following the 11-0 WTAMU shutout, both teams would meet again at 7 to decide the evening’s doubleheader victor.

The end of the evening proved to be a pitcher’s duel, with only one run and five combined hits from both teams. INF Justin Martinez helped clinch the weekend series with his solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Finishing the weekend series, and sweeping the #22 Texas A&M Kingsville, the Buffs rolled with a 14-3 victory.

The Javelinas struck first with an RBI/double in the first. TAMUK would then send two more home in the third. WTAMU would then get on board with a Martinez double leading to a Madrid RBI/single. Keone Givens then sent a shot over the wall, scoring two runs. The Buffs would later go on to score six in the fourth inning and four in the fifth innings, extending their lead 14-3. WTAMU had finished the series in commanding fashion.

This weekend consisted of aggressive offensive and pitching duels to satisfy any baseball fan. WTAMU sets off this weekend to take on Angelo State for a four-game series in San Angelo, TX.
