September 11, 2025, will mark the 24th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack in American history. Roughly 3,000 lives were lost after the Islamic terrorist organization, al-Qaeda, hijacked four airplanes, crashing them into the Pentagon, a rural field in Pennsylvania, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. This event came to be known as 9/11.
“Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America,” said former President George W. Bush, initially following the attacks in his address to the nation on Sept. 11, 2001.
Two decades later, Americans continue to honor the lives lost in the attacks and the first responders who risked their lives during the national emergency. The Randall County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual memorial service on Sept. 11, 2025. The service will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, located at 4111 S. Georgia Amarillo, Texas. The ceremony will be open to the public.
“All are welcome – families, friends, neighbors, schools, veterans, first responders, and community groups as we stand side by side to reflect, show gratitude, and ensure that we will never forget,” said the RCSO’s invitation.
For those interested in further researching the events of 9/11, online resources, such as those available at the National Archives, are readily accessible to the public. The 9/11 Commission Report urges Americans to maintain a constant state of preparedness.
“Civilians and first responders will again find themselves on the front lines. We must plan for that eventuality. A rededication to preparedness is perhaps the best way to honor the memories of those we lost that day,” said the 9/11 Commission Report.
