To cover the losses of Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian to the Southland Conference, the Lone Star Conference extended a football invitation to former Division II independent McMurry University of Abilene, Texas. The Warhawks were brought in to complement the two-week conference LSC playoff coming in the 2014 season.
“This move also adds great value to the LSC,” Commissioner Stan Wagnon said via press release. “McMurry has been very competitive as it transitions into membership at the Division II level, winner of seven ballgames last year. Additionally, their location in Abilene is ideal, and bringing to eight the total number of LSC football teams is a perfect fit for our new scheduling model.”
Coming off of an 8-3 season in 2012 and a victory at the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl, the Warhawks will have a new head coach and is set to become an active Division II member in July of 2015. The Warhawks play five Lone Star squads this year, including West Texas A&M onOct. 26 in Abilene at 2pm.
