WTAMU hosted a Social Work Program Conference, on Oct. 21, 2013 at the Virgil Henson Activities Center. Senior students organized the conference for all of WT students. One of the head directors, Cara Speer, encouraged everyone to attend the event, which also included students from Amarillo College. Breakfast and lunch were provided, with a total of six great workshops to choose from and networking opportunities for all students attending.

“The seniors do a great job presenting the workshops and most are doing the conference as part of their senior internship,” Speer said.

The conference is designed to let the seniors give their presentations, and there were booths set up by all the agencies that are looking to recruit graduating seniors. The seniors also had a booth to answer questions from up-and-coming students as well as recruit new seniors for the next semester. Dr. Melody Loya is another member in charge of the event. Loya said the conference aimed to help all Social Work majors or people interested in social work.

“The event is put in place to develop professionalism in the work place and to connect with lifelong learning, because we never stop learning,” Loya said.

Kelsey Cunningham is attending the meeting, as she is a social work major. Cunningham was also required to be at the conference.

“I have to go to the conference but I already wanted to, because I am hoping I will find a good internship for myself,” Cunningham said.
