Let’s talk about parking. For three semesters I have heard the same old song: “There’s no parking!” or “We need more parking spots!” and trust me, we all hear you. Here’s the thing: Let’s be real about this- we aren’t utilizing the free parking lot that the First United Bank (FUB) has available. The FUB is home to the WTAMU Buffs and Lady Buffs Basketball, along with hosting numerous other events like ceremonies, graduations and craft and trade shows. Their website talks about the 5,000+ seating capacity, which basically, translates to a ton of available parking. And because I’m a dedicated citizen (and slightly obsessive), I went and counted. Every. Single. Spot. You’re welcome; I do it for the people. To sum this up, it’s not a lack of parking, it’s a lack of…well, utilizing our resources when it comes to free parking. Did I mention that it’s free?
Now, I know what you’re thinking: The FUB isn’t just across the street from campus so parking there doesn’t exactly make your classes walking distance. I get it, so let me introduce to you another resource that we have on campus. It’s truly a wonderful one too, please note that I’m saying this from first hand experience. May I introduce you to the Shuttle Bus service! The Shuttle Bus, also known as WT Express, operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.. During the busy times of the day, routes stay running smoothly thanks to the help from the Panhandle Community Services (PCS). There is a WT Mobile app that tracks the buses in real time, shows scheduled arrival times, and conveniently displays routes to destinations like Walmart and off-campus residences. There are several drop-off and pick-up spots around campus that you may have already seen. We have the FUB, JBK, Activity Center, AG Building, the FAC and the Natural Science Building, or even apartments like Torres Evolution & Legends. (Depending on the bus, don’t say I didn’t tell you so) And guess what, it’s free of charge!
Beyond the convenience of the WT Express, there’s a unique warmth to the service. The shuttle staff, often retired individuals, aren’t just drivers but genuine members of the campus community. They choose to be there, creating a friendly atmosphere where they remember your name, ask about your day, and show a genuine interest in your classes. It’s a personal touch that transforms a simple ride into a positive interaction.
Bruce Daniel, one of the friendly WT Express drivers, was incredibly helpful in answering my questions to shed light on how the shuttle benefits students, all while sharing the enjoyment of his role.
“I’ve been here about four and a half years,” Daniel said. “I think the main misconception is that people think that it’s a city transit, where it’s nasty or like a school bus. They don’t look at it like a convenience”
I can confidently say it definitely does not give ‘school bus,’ they have sweets like candy, air fresheners and they even have seatbelts for safety. On days when the shuttles need to be worked on or like I stated before when the shuttles need extra help PCS lends their shuttle and those are just as nice. Air conditioning, seat belts and it’s accessible for wheelchairs.
“I do think it is a good alternative to driving and parking on campus mainly because the more cars you have driving on campus, the more opportunities there are for accidents,” Daniel said. For student safety, it helps reduce the chances of accidents.”
So sure, I enjoy my little movie-moment drives, you know, the ones with the dramatic window views and blasting music. But honestly, the best part is the conversation— meeting fellow students and chatting with the drivers, making the commute more than just a ride.
Joe Gutierrez, one of our morning shuttle drivers, says his favorite part is talking to students.
“My favorite part would be talking to students and having a good conversation.” Gutierrez said.
Tim Boardbeck, another one of our afternoon commuters, tells me about how he tries to help students by having snacks for them and providing support for whatever they might be going through.
“I have good conversations, there’s been students that have ridden with me for three or four semesters. I’m a soundboard for them. If they had a bad day or they had a bad test or something. I’ll tell them ‘Let me have it.’ ” Boardbeck said. “I have snacks for them and I try to give them encouragement for what they’re going through”
So, Buffs, let’s ditch the ‘parking issue’ and embrace the FUB and the WT Express. It’s not about having no parking; it’s about having options. Free options at that! Think of it like more parking, less struggling to find a parking spot, and maybe even a candy-filled chat with the staff. It’s a win-win, really. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a dramatic window-gazing session to attend to… on the shuttle, of course.
