Lady Buffs ground Falcons in season opener

The WTAMU Lady Buffs came out firing on all cylinders in their season opener in Odessa, Texas on Sept .2 as they took on the UT-Permian Basin Falcons, beating the team 7-0.

“I felt really good about the game. I was pretty confident that we would win and were the better team, but I didn’t know that we would score seven goals. That’s a lot of goals,” Head Coach Chad Webb said after the blowout.

Just 14 seconds into the match, Leslie Briggs had her first assist of the night when Hannah Blakely scored on the Falcons’ net, setting the tone for the game. Briggs then served up another pass to Melissa Carnero after eight minutes of play to give the Lady Buffs a 2-0 advantage.

WT continued their domination when Berklee Watson scored another goal for the team on a long free kick. Briggs once again added to her spectacular night, scoring off Becky McMullen’s corner kick after 30 minutes of play.

The second half looked much the same on the pitch as three other WT players stepped into the scoring action. Jessie Thomas, Heather Terbush, and Becky Peth all scored their first goals of the season during the half, showing that the win was very much a team effort.

Yvette Bedoy was credited with the winning goal for the team with four saves in the first 45 minutes. Jamie Hall was in net for the second half and tallied one save.

The domination of their season opener has the players excited for the rest of their season as well.

“It’s a great start, I’m more than excited. We all came out really hard and we’re excited to start good this season,” Midfielder Kelsey Wright said.

However, Coach Webb expects to see even more improvement from the girls as the season progresses.

“Even though we scored seven goals, we still made some mistakes today,” Webb said. “We’ll be working on that and trying to figure out where all the new players fit in our system and on our team. There are lots of things we can continue to improve on.”

The Lady Buffs continue their road trip today against Dallas Baptist before returning home. Their first home game of the season will be on Sept. 9 against Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 7:30pm on the pitch.
