Last weekend was an interesting one for the men’s soccer team as they went on a two-state road trip to continue their no-loss streak.
First up was a rematch against Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. on Oct. 21; a team WTAMU had suffered a 2-1 loss to earlier in the season. The first half ended with no tallies on the board but the Buffs registered seven shots to NSU’s two.
The Buffs would come out swinging in the second half with Chandler Elder taking advantage of a bobble by NSU’s goalie 25 minutes in. Elder’s first goal of the season was countered 10 minutes later by the Riverhawks when they helped the ball find the net.The teams would have to play through two overtimes to end with a 1-1 tie, the second consecutive tie for WT.
On Oct. 23, the team had its second rematch of the weekend as it faced Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. While a fire on WT’s bus Sunday morning postponed the game for a few hours, it wouldn’t be enough to end the Buffs’ streak.
Fort Hays made the first move of the game, scoring four minutes in. The tally would be the only one of the first half, even with the Buffaloes registering 10 shots.
The Buffs refused to give up after going to the locker room down a point at the half. Rodrigo Morin used a Lukas Garcia corner kick to tie the game 15 minutes into the second for the only goal of the half.
Once more, the Buffs found themselves going into double OT, their third in three games. It took five minutes, but the Buffs ended it when Thomas Gellene used a rebound off a blocked Robert Njoroge shot to end the game 2-1.
‘We have won a lot of confidence in ourselves over the last few weeks. And we showed in both games that we are a good team. We dominated both games but had difficulties to close the game out. So we can be happy with the results even if we were really close to getting two wins this weekend,” Defender Daniel Angloher said.
The win took the Buffs’ record to 6-6-2 overall and a Lone Star Conference record of 1-3-0 on the season with a seven-game record of 4-1-2 in October. Their next game is Oct. 28 on The Pitch at 8 p.m.
