The Lady Buffs’ basketball squad enjoyed a successful trip to the Lady Lions Classic in Fort Smith, Ark., as they defeated the RiverHawks of Northeastern State on Nov. 8 and the Lady Bears of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Nov. 9.
Mark Kellogg, first-year head coach at WTAMU, enjoyed a 64-55 victory versus NSU in his first game at the helm. His team got off to a hot start in the first half, outscoring the RiverHawks 30-19, and never looked back.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by senior Casey Land, who went 7-of-14 from the field, nailing four three-pointers on the way to a 21-point night. Land was also 3-of-4 from the foul line and recorded four rebounds.
Senior Devin Griffin chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds and junior Lacee Logan recorded eleven points of her own. Junior Chontiquah White led WT on the boards with seven total rebounds.
Griffin’s 13 points pushed her into 20th all-time in scoring in WT history, surpassing Latraica Spencer [1998-2000].
The Lady Buffs improved to 2-0 on the season thanks to an 85-70 victory over UAFS the next day, recording 32 of their points from the foul line. WT trailed at the half, 39-43, before outscoring the Lady Bears in the second half, 46-27, to grab the victory.
The starting five for the Lady Buffs recorded 72 of the team’s 85 total points with Griffin leading the way with a game-high 27 points, going 8-of-15 from the field and 10-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Logan and White also finished in double digits in scoring, chipping in 19 and ten points, respectively. Logan was 8-of-21 from the field and White got eight of her 10 points at the foul line.
WT has the upcoming week off and will travel to Goodwell, Okla., to take on the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State on Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Buffs basketball home opener will be against the Adams State Grizzlies at the First United Bank Center on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
