The WTAMU Buffalo and Lady Buffs track teams traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the University of New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Feb. 3 and 4. WT grabbed a total of seven top 10 finishes over the weekend.
One of the Buffs’ strongest events came in the men’s 600 meter. Martin Puga finished fifth with a time of 1:24.06. The Lady Buffs also scored a top 10 finish in the 600 meter. Rhemecka Graham ran it in 1:37.56 for a sixth place finish.
The Buffs also got a strong performance by Tommy Curry in the men’s 60 meter. Curry took fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 6.90. Curry ran a 6.88 time for a seventh place finish in the final event.The Buff’s highest placing came in the men’s 800 meter. Alexander Korn got fourth place with a time of 1:53.35.
WT scored another top 10 finish in the men’s distance medley. Patrick Scheuchzer, Xavier Bennett, Alexander Korn and Dylan Doss grabbed sixth with a time of 10:16.08. The Lady Buffs grabbed fifth place in the women’s 4×400 medley, running it in 3:50.99.
The Lady Buffs also had a strong showing in the women’s 5000 meter. Aries Bazaldua scored a time of 19:16.89 for 10th place. WT’s men just missed another top 10 placing as Thomas Harris finished 12th in the 5000 meter.
WT got one more top 10 placing in the men’s shot put. Dane Hamrick finished ninth with a 15.28 meter throw. The Lady Buffs came close to another top 10 finish when Casey Nelson’s 12.16 meter throw got her 11th place.
“This weekend was really one of the highlights of my career here at WT,” said Head Coach Darren Flowers. “The promising thing is that we still have room to grow and improve. If this group continues to show up every day and get better, we could be a team that surprises people this year.”
