The WTAMU Buffalo baseball team hosted the Cameron Aggies for a four-game series on March 16-18 to open their Lone Star Conference schedule. The Buffs improved to 15-4 overall and 4-0 in the LSC with the weekend sweep.
WT started quickly in game one on Mar. 16. The Buffs scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third to take a 9-1 lead after three innings. WT picked up three more runs in the fifth and got a 12-2 run-rule win to start the series. Senior Jess Cooper went 3-for-4 at the plate including two doubles and three RBIs.The Buffs and Aggies were tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth of the first game of a doubleheader on March 17 when the Buffs broke the game open. WT scored seven in the fourth inning and eight in the fifth inning on their way to a 19-7 victory. Junior reliever Billy Gonzalez (3-0) got the win for the Buffs.
The Buffs won the second game of the day and the third of the weekend in walk-off fashion. Down 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Patrick Ramirez hit a two-run triple to tie the game at nine. Cameron gave back-to-back intentional walks to Cooper and senior Kendall Boone to load the bases for junior Parker Wood. The Aggies would force in the winning run by hitting Wood with a pitch.
“That just shows their respect for the middle of the order,” said Head Coach Matt Vanderburg.
WT also closed out the weekend by getting a late run to finish the sweep on March 18. With the game tied at six in the bottom of the eighth, Ramirez hit an RBI single to lead the Buffs to a 7-6 victory. Ramirez did not start the game, but came in during the seventh as a defensive replacement at catcher.
“[Ramirez] is a one of a kind player,” Vanderburg said.
