A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 9 p.m. at the Pedestrian Mall in honor and memory of WTAMU student Shelbi McClure.
According to Student Body President Nick Goettsche, all students are encouraged to attend the vigil and welcome to say a few words.
“This will not be a speaking engagement on [the students] part unless [they would] like to say a few words,” Goettsche said in an email to administration. “We just think it would be comforting to students to see [other students] in attendance.”
There will also be a moment of silence at tonight’s volleyball match against Angelo State and Saturday’s football game against Tarleton State in remembrance of McClure.
According to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway spokesman Joel Faust, McClure was driving southbound perpendicular to the train tracks at the 100 block of Fourth Street when she stopped in the middle of the tracks. The westbound train, traveling at 40 m.p.h., collided with the car on the driver’s side.
Police reports stated the 21-year-old was found deceased after they responded to the traffic collision at 12:06 a.m. Tuesday morning.
