The WTAMU Buffalo baseball team hosted the Colorado Christian Cougars for a three game weekend series from Feb. 23-24 at Wilder Park in Canyon. The Buffs picked two run-rule victories as they swept the Cougars.
Colorado Christian scored a run in the second inning and another in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth in game one on Feb. 23. WT rallied in the bottom of the inning when senior Chad Miles hit an RBI double and junior Matt Redfearn knocked in two runs on a single in the bottom of the fifth to lift the Buffs to a 3-2 game one win.
Junior Nick Duncan (3-0) got the win, giving up two runs on eight hits in five innings of work for WT. Redfearn finished the game one for three at the plate with two RBIs.
The Buffs started game two with two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in third to take a 5-0 lead after three full innings. The Cougars got on the board with two runs in the fourth, but WT answered with three more of their own in the bottom half of the inning, taking an 8-2 lead. After Colorado Christian scored one run in the sixth, the Buffs plated five in the seventh to secure the 13-3 run-rule win.
Junior Joshua Weyker (1-1) got the win, going six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Seniors Parker Wood and Spenser Smith each drove in three runs for WT. Junior Patrick Ramirez and Redfearn also drove in two runs each for the Buffs.
After the Cougars started the scoring in the series finale on Feb. 24 with a one-run first inning, WT took complete control. The Buffs scored two in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh en route to an 11-1 victory to complete the weekend sweep.
Senior Andrew Elkins (2-0) got the win for WT, going six innings and giving up one run on four hits. Senior Tate Baker went three-for-three on the day with two RBIs. Senior Cody Wright also had two RBIs on a pinch hit single in the seventh.
The Buffs are now 11-2 this season and are on a four-game winning streak. Lubbock Christian will host WT on March 1 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
