Win battle of unbeaten teams
The WTAMU Men’s basketball team was at home Dec. 2 against Cameron University in an LSC crossover contest.
The Buffs overcame a lackluster first half performance to claim a 75-67 overtime victory over the Aggies. This is the first time the Buffs have started a season 5-0 since the 2005-06 season.
In the first half, both teams struggled to find a rhythm in their offense. Both teams went 7:30 without scoring during the interval. With 5:21 remaining, Cameron was holding a slim 14-11 advantage.
Cameron built up a 27-16 lead with 2:48 remaining before halftime. WT went into halftime trailing 31-20.
Senior Jacquiese Holcombe gave the Buffs a spark in the opening moments of the second half when he converted an old fashioned three-point play. WT got back within five points at the 17:57 mark of the second half.
With 12:30 remaining in regulation WT trailed 40-37, the Buffs made it a one-point game at the 11:50 mark of the second half. Cameron then re-took the lead and was clinging to a 52-48 lead with 6:40 remaining.
The Aggies kept playing strong down the stretch and with 4:18 remaining, were up 56-53. WT eventually tied things up for good at 61 apiece and sent the game into overtime.
In the extra session, the Buffs outscored the Aggies 14-6 en route to a 75-67 victory.
Junior Lionel Foster led the way for the Buffs with 18 points on the night. Fellow junior Rod Little chipped in 14 points followed by senior LaDarius Hall with 12 points. Senior Jacquiese Holcomb had 10 points on the night. WT shot 42 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line.
WT will now prepare for Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Dec. 4. Tip-off at the First United Bank Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
