The number one goal for the WTAMU Buff baseball team is to do something they didn’t do last season. Qualify for the Lone Star Conference tournament.
After their series with Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 18-19, they might just well be on their way to accomplishing that goal.
WT faced a tough situation in game one against the Greyhounds. With the game tied at 3-3 after three innings of play, it looked as though the odds were against the Buffs. However, things changed dramatically in the top of the fifth inning when the Buffs pounded out nine runs to take a 12-3 lead. WT added to that lead in the top of the sixth with five more runs and eventually take a 17-3 victory.
The Buffs offense was led by senior catcher Garrett Campfield who went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two doubles. Junior Jordan Easom also went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the day.
Junior Justin Kuks picked up the victory on the mound for the Buffs (3-0) giving up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts while pitching six innings.
ENMU nearly evened the series in game two but eventually lost a close game 2-1 to the Buffs. WT took the lead in the top of the fourth and eventually held on for the win.
Junior infielder Jess Cooper and junior outfielder Brad Elders both drove in runs for the Buffs in the contest.
Junior Irving Camacho picked up the victory (3-0) giving up one run on one hit in six innings of work. Fellow junior Zach Walker picked up the save giving up no runs on one hit in one inning of work.
A weekend sweep was completed in game three when the Buffs held off a seventh inning rally by the Greyhounds to claim a 7-5 victory.
Junior Jordan Easom led the offense for the Buffs going 4-for-5 with an RBI while scoring two runs. Senior Jonathan Paez picked up the win in his first start of the season for the Buffs (1-0) giving up three runs on six hits in six innings. Fellow senior Mike De Long picked up his first save of the season giving up one run on no hits in one inning of relief.
WT’s overall record now stands at 8-2 with a 5-1 mark in LSC play. The Buffs will now take a break from conference play to take on University of the Southwest in a doubleheader on Feb. 22. First pitch from Wilder Park is scheduled for noon.
