Improve to 10-2 overall
Ever since the brand new Wilder Park opened at the Buffalo Sports Complex, it seems that the WTAMU Buffs baseball team has made itself at home at its new ballpark.
On Feb. 22 University of the Southwest found out the hard way just how comfortable the Buffs are at home as the teams played a doubleheader.
In game one, WT wasted no time in gaining a 7-0 lead after just two innings of play. Things didn’t get much better for USW after the fifth inning. By that time the Buffs were out of sight and eventually claimed a 12-0 shutout victory.
Leading the Buffs offense was senior outfielder Will Miller who went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the day. Junior infielder Kendall Boone contributed with his second homerun of the season.
Junior Casey Lish picked up the victory on the mound for the Buffs (1-1) giving up no runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. Fellow junior Mike Alger shut the door on the Mustangs in relief giving up one hit in two innings of work.
Game two produced much of the same for the Buffs. However, USW did manage to take a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the second inning. But, that lead quickly disappeared as the Buffs scored six runs to claim a 7-2 lead. After the bottom of the fourth inning WT lead 14-2. The Buffs tacked on two more runs to claim a 16-2 victory and complete the sweep.
Senior infielder Trey Horn and junior infielder Jess Cooper powered the Buffs offense with four RBI apiece.
Junior Chad McLin picked up the win on the mound (1-1) giving up no runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of work.
The Buffs overall record now stands at 10-2. WT will play host to another non-conference opponent, Northwest Missouri State, on Feb. 26-27 with a doubleheader on both days. First pitch is scheduled for noon from Wilder Park on both days.
