Womack earns complete game victory
The #7 ranked WTAMU Lady Buff softball team traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico to play a doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands on Feb. 22.
NMHU was eager to pull off the upset, but the Lady Buffs were in no mood for a letdown after coming off an impressive weekend to open up their new ballpark.
In game one, WT used a strong pitching performance to keep the Cowgirls at bay while the offense got just enough to get by. The Lady Buffs got the scoring started in the top of the third inning and tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh thanks to a leadoff homerun by senior infielder Christie Russell. NMHU simply had no answer as the Lady Buffs claimed a 3-0 shutout victory.
Powering the offense for the Lady Buffs was senior outfielder Kasey Henderson who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Marci Womack picked up the victory (5-0) giving up no runs on three hits and striking out five in the complete game victory.
WT made sure proceedings weren’t as close in game number two of the day. However, the Cowgirls did manage to tie the game after two innings of play at 2-2. But, nine runs over the next three innings helped the Lady Buffs dispatch of NMHU in six innings 11-2.
Sophomore Brooke Webster led the offense for WT as she went 1-for-1 with three RBI. Junior Meghan Brown and sophomore Meghan Slattery each had two RBI in the contest.
Junior Shelbey Cockrell earned the victory (4-1) allowing two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Chantel Pearson came on in relief giving up no runs and no hits in 0.2 innings of work.
WT’s overall record now stands at 9-1. The Lady Buffs will now prepare for the second triangular tournament which will involve Texas A&M International and Central Oklahoma on Feb. 25-26 at Lady Buff Yard. WT will face TAMI at 11:00 a.m. and UCO at 4:00 p.m. both days.
