If there was any question about the WTAMU Buff baseball team being legitament contenders this season, those questions were answered in a big way on Feb. 28 as the Buffs finished their four-game series with Northwest Missouri State at Wilder Park.
WT once again used their powerful offensive attack to smother NMSU and finish off a sweep of the Bearcats with a 17-6 victory.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Buffs took a 1-0 lead before the Bearcats tied the game in the top of the third. WT responded right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Not to be outdone, NMSU struck back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the game again at 3-3.
But, in the bottom half of the inning WT responded with a seven run explosion which effectively put the game out of reach at 10-3. The Bearcats plated three more runs in the sixth inning but the Buffs were able to do the same and then add four more runs to claim a 17-6 victory and a four game sweep over the Bearcats.
WT was led by junior Kendall Boone who went 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Fellow junior Bryce Baugh went 2-for-5 with four RBI which included a three-run homerun in the fourth inning over the scoreboard in left field.
Junior Casey Lish picked up the victory pitching for the Buffs (2-1) giving up six runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
WT’s overall record now stands at 14-2. The Buffs will now prepare for a showdown with #16 ranked Cameron University with the first game set for March 3 from Wilder Park in Canyon. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
