Becky McMullen started the first game off right, scoring a goal in the 20th minute, but Commerce fought right back with a goal five minutes later. Forward Leslie Briggs tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 29:55 mark, giving the Lady Buffs the lead going into the second half.
The Lions rebounded by tying the game only three minutes into the second half before taking the lead at the 65:40 mark. WTAMU’s 3-2 loss was their second Lone Star Conference loss of the season.“As a team I think we are doing well. I think there are a couple things we need to work on but we haven’t really practiced for about the last week and a half so I think a week of practice will really help us,” said Briggs.
Rebounding from their loss on Friday, WT came ready to play on Sunday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference game against TWU. Briggs continued her season rampage, scoring two goals in the first 16 minutes of the game for her fifth and sixth points of the season.
Kelsey Wright added to the goal tally 28 minutes into the game, allowing WT to go into the second period with a score of 3-0.
While WT went scoreless in the second half, goalkeeper Jamie Hall only allowed one goal in 90 minutes of play with five saves to record a 3-1 win. The win against TWU took the Lady Buffs’ win total up to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the LSC.
“I think that we started off strong, then our conference record went down 0-2, but I think that was just a rough patch,” midfielder Kelsey Wright said. “I’m really happy with our win today and I think it helps us with our confidence. Being able to play as a team again really boosts our confidence and lets us go into our next game with our head held high, knowing that we are good.”
WT will play two games at home this weekend, starting with a match against Midwestern State on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. before taking on Abilene Christian University at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 25.
