The No.14 WTAMU Lady Buff volleyball team traveled down Highway 60 to match up against the Eastern New Mexico University Zias on Oct. 4 in Portales, N.M. WT rebounded after suffering their second loss of the season by sweeping ENMU 25-10, 25-18 and 25-20, improving their record to 17-2 and 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Lady Buffs began the first set by quickly building a 13-5 lead. After a Zias timeout, WT took the momentum and went on a 10-4 run. The Lady Buffs wasted no time ending the set 25-10.
The two teams traded points in the second set and the Lady Buffs held a slim 14-11 lead heading into their first timeout. WT took advantage of good defensive play to build a 19-13 lead. ENMU went on a brief run to bring the score to 21-18, but WT took control and finished the set 25-18.
The Zias jumped out to a 16-14 lead in the third set. After taking a timeout, the Lady Buffs went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. WT finished the match on a 10-3 run, winning the set 25-20.
“In set three we played our worst. The first two points and last two points were unforced errors,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said.
Junior Stormi Lancaster led WT’s offense with 10 kills. Junior Erin Dougherty also picked up nine kills on the night. Junior Lauren Beville registered a match-high 19 digs, and junior Lacy Hayes had 36 assists.
“We are getting better and I see transfer from practice to games, but this team settles too quickly,” Skoch said.
