The No. 14 ranked WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Lubbock for a non-conference match against the NAIA power Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps on Oct. 20. WT prevailed in four sets, 25-19, 14-25, 25-19 and 25-13, giving the Lady Buffs a 23-2 overall record.
LCU began the first game with a 6-7 lead. The Lady Chaps then went on a 7-1 run to increase that lead to 14-7. The Lady Buffs pulled together and outscored LCU 18-5 to win the set.
WT had an 8-7 lead early in the second set, when LCU went on an 8-3 run to take a 11-15 lead into a Lady Buffs timeout. The Lady Chaps scored 10 of the final 13 points in the set to win it.
LCU built a 16-17 advantage late in the third set, but Lady Buffs went on a 9-2 run to take the set 25-19.
In the fourth set, WT grabbed a commanding 16-6 lead going in a Lady Chaps timeout. The Lady Buffs were able to hold off LCU, outscoring them 9-7, to win the set and the match.
“The players showed something tonight,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said. “Hopefully, this will be the starting point of many positive changes.”
Junior Sarah Martin led the Lady Buffs’ offense with 12 kills, followed by sophomore Ashley Davis with 10. Junior Lauren Beville had 22 digs and junior Lacy Hayes gave out 34 assists.
The Lady Buffs will attempt to avenge their only conference loss this year when the Tarleton State TexAnns come to play in The Box on Oct. 22. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
