While the Buffaloes only have one more weekend of games to play this season, the team managed to keep their no-lose streak alive on Oct. 28 against No. 12-ranked University of the Incarnate Word.
“We were hoping to turn it into getting into playoffs, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen,” Forward Wayne Bruton said. “But it’s a positive run for next season.”
The Buffs last loss of the season, and only loss in October, came at the hands of Incarnate Word on Oct. 2 on the road with a score of 3-1.Just like their previous match-up with UIW, WTAMU found the net first when Wayne Bruton scored off a tricky side of the foot goal a little over 16 minutes into the game. However, unlike the Oct. 2 match, UIW wouldn’t strike back in the first half, sending the teams into the locker rooms with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Buffs.
It looked as though the Buffs would be able to end the game with a shutout as the clock ticked down in the second half with UIW not finding the net. However, with only 2:40 left in the game, the Cardinals scored, throwing the game into the Buffs’ fourth overtime in four games.
Even with two ten-minute overtimes, neither team scored, ending with a 1-1 tie. The tie was the Buffs’ third in four games and takes their record to 6-6-3 with a Lone Star Conference record of 1-3-1.
“I’m very disappointed. I felt like we created a lot of chances to win the game and it’s kind of been a little bit of our Achilles’ Heel lately of dominating and creating chances and not getting the second goal,” Head Coach Butch Lauffer said. “We couldn’t hold the lead the last two minutes and it comes back to bite you,”
The Buffs take on Saint Edward’s University at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 at The Pitch for their last home game of the season. Their last game of the season will be Nov. 6 in Wichita Falls against Midwestern State.
