Many students at West Texas A&M University pursue higher education with the help of scholarships, grants and even monetary assistance from family. Some of these students need only to attend class and make good grades. Others, however, have to juggle student life with a job in order to stay on top of their financial obligations. For some, seeking employment through the University offers a way to help with finances. One such student is Animal Science major Colton Meyer.
Meyer was named 2015 Student Employee of the Year for his services as Ranch Hand on the Nance Ranch located east of Canyon. More than 15 students were in the running this year.
“He is always striving to make himself better and learn new things. That is important to an employer,” Landon Canterbury, graduate research assistant, said. “He is dependable and honest, two things that mean a lot to me. I can count on Colton to show up and do his job every time I need him without hesitation. That’s why I voted for him.”
Associate Professor and Director of the WT Nance Ranch Dr. David Lust gave more insight as to what Meyer’s duties consist of.
“Colton is involved in all aspects of the Ranch operation,” Lust said. “Duties include maintenance, livestock care, preparing for Ranch events, maintaining equipment, farming and assisting with youth events such as contests.”
Each one of those duties has multiple criteria involved with it.
Student Employee of the Year is awarded annually.
“This was definitely unexpected, I was just doing my job and didn’t expect to get an award,” Meyer said. “Whatever you do, you have to go above and beyond what they ask of you and be willing to work extra if needed.”
Those who vote on the award look for certain characteristics when considering candidates.
“Be reliable, be responsible and do your job with such excellence that you are noticed by others,” Lust said.
