The Outreach and Instruction Department at Cornette Library at West Texas A&M University hosted the Student Success Fair that took place on Tuesday, Sept. 10th. Students attending this event had the opportunity to learn about the free student resources that WT has to offer.
Jesus Retana, a sophomore electrical engineering major, explained the importance of being aware of the resources that WTAMU offers to students.
“It is good for us students to know the resources we have available not just for those struggling but also to reinforce what we learn,” Retana said.
Retana explained the added benefits of connecting with resources such as the Math Lab, the Cornette Library and Tutoring Services.
“Not only it gives us extra help we might need, but it also gives us some confidence,” Retana said.
Jason Harrison, Math Lab tutor, explained how the math lab has helped students to be successful.
“We’re kind of like a study area and tutoring session,” Harrison said. “It allows people to do their thing, but whenever they have a question, we’re there for them.”
Harrison explained the broad areas of tutoring that the Math Lab provides, from beginning algebra to calculus two, and the importance of studying.
“I think it definitely just helps to be able to study anytime you want; it’s good to have a place that you know you can go to,” Harrison said. “A lot of people who go there frequently, I’ve seen do a lot better on their tests.”
Harrison shares his advice for studying efficiently:
“When you are studying, try to eliminate distractions because you end up spending way more time than you need to,” Harrison said.
Chelsea Kuehler, Cornette Library’s Student Outreach Librarian, shares the resources that the library provides to students.
“We have books, we have articles online, we have databases, course guides, we have subject guides, we have study rooms that are private,” Kuehler said. “We have a 24 hour chat service with research librarians.”
Kuehler gives her tips for being a successful student.
“Come to the library, ask questions, get the help you need,” Kuehler said. “If you’re confused or don’t know where to start, come see us and we’ll help you find it.”
